Pumpkin Coffee Cake

The air is crisp, and our grass is blanketed under a layer of remain unseen until April or May. When the weather gets like this, I really, really get into the mood to bake! Today, I baked both this moist and wonderful Pumpkin Coffee Cake, I also baked Biscotti....Pumpkin Biscotti. It was just a pumpkin kind of day!

We Meet Again

Yesterday evening, the Aurora Borealis came out to play again. I recently discovered a great spot near my home to go and take pictures. My neighbor and I headed out to it, until the clouds moved in and took away the fun for the evening.

I'm a Glutton for Punishment

Since we moved to Alaska, I seriously have given up the idea of EVER getting a good night's sleep on a regular basis. In the summer you don't want to sleep because it is light all the time. In the cooler months you don't want to sleep because you have things like this making an appearance when the geomagnetic field is just right...

Military Monday | Pearl Harbor

I have been saving this post to share on a Military Monday. The final day in Hawaii for the Army Family Action Plan Conference, when the conference was over, we drove straight to this beautiful and emotional location. Iris and I both felt that this was the must see on the island, that we truly had to see before leaving that night.

Memorials of a War and a Queen

As we walked along the beach in Waikiki, we came to this building.

Driving through Honolulu

After the final day of our Army Family Action Plan conference, we loaded up our luggage, changed out of our business clothes, and headed to enjoy our last evening in Hawaii. The southern shore of Oahu is such a stark contrast to the quiet North Shore. Down here, you see sky scrapers and busyness everywhere!

Tonight there was a beautiful double rainbow after some much-needed rain!

I hope to see lots of more rainbows, and plenty of more rain to wash away the rest of the snow that still remains from winter.

Hawaii Here I Come!

I have officially been selected to represent Army Families at the mid-level Army Family Action Plan Conference for the Pacific Region. And where is the headquarters of the Pacific Region?

(Images Source: Bing Images)

I've never been there, so I am a little excited. I know this is for a conference and most of my time will be taken up with that, but hopefully I'll be able to do some site-seeing an evening or two after the "work" is done.

I've never been on a trip by myself before...other than when I left home for the army so many years ago.

What will this Mom do?!

Item #1 is to sew my camera protecting insert for my purse, so I can carry my camera safely, and not need my camera bag...because you KNOW that my camera will not leave my side the whole time I am there!

The Things that You See on a Walk

Last night after dinner, the kiddos and I went on a walk through some nearby woods. For well over half a mile of the walk "in" we were trailing a huge fox who would trot along the path, stop and look at us, and keep trotting. A couple times he or she just stopped, sat down, and stared at us. He'd watch us 'til we got too close, and then start trotting up the trail again. At one point I stopped and snapped this picture of his track. That's a good-sized fox!

The Tale of the "Twitterpated" Tundra Swans

The other day I was on my way home from the commissary, and as I crossed the bridge, I saw a whole bunch of Tundra Swans. I had seen my first two of the year on Monday (as well as my first geese of the year), but with all that I saw today I just had to stop and take some pictures.

Tundra Swans

Yesterday I drove over to the nearby bridge at the Chena River, and saw a pair of beautiful Tundra Swans.

Military Monday Week 3: Linky Party! - The Order of the Yellow Garter

"Give me the greatness of heart to see,
The difference between duty and his love for me.
Give me the understanding so that I may know,
When duty calls him, he must go.
Give me a task to do each day,
To fill the time when he's away.
When he's in a foreign land,
Keep him safe in your loving hand."
- Unknown -

The Cavalry has a tradition of the Yellow Garter, like the one you see above.

In the 1700-1800's the lovely ladies of Cav Troopers would wear a yellow ribbon or scarf on their arm, parasol, hat, etc. to show that they were waiting for their soldier to return from protecting the wagon trains.

While looking at my "Phone Pics"

While scrolling through my photos in my phone, I saw this one that I took this winter. It is the coldest temperature I have ever experienced.

And as I look out my windows at a fresh layer of snow....I am really missing the South! When we moved here, we thought we might retire and stay forever. But sometimes your expectations are molded by reality and experience.

We love Alaska. It is beautiful and amazing. But it isn't where we long to be forever.

"Oh Spring, hast thou forsaken me?"

Springtime Flowers

Around here, we still have feet of snow covering our yards and flowerbeds. It will be a while before we see sprouts pushing through the earth.
But the other day, my daughter surprised me with some tulips. I put them in water in the kitchen, and on this day the sun was shining through the kitchen window, right on the flowers, so I grabbed my camera.

Some Things Should Never be Outdated

I'll warn you right now...this is going to be one of my old fogey, politically incorrect posts.  I don't post these very often....but every once in a while you just have to let it out.

There are some things that should never, ever go out of style.

Women with Curves and Femininity.

Common Sense.

Chocolate and Butter.
(Not necessarily at the same time.......but maybe... not necessarily ...not.)

or how about Etiquette and Propriety?

Etiquette: "the conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social or official life"

Propriety: "The customs and manners of polite society."

I mean really!

Let me go back.....

Going on a Date with my Honey

I've been posting lots of recipes lately, so I thought I would share something else that's happened around our part of the world.

On Friday evening, my husband and I went out on a date.

I was incredibly nervous. Not because it was our first date since our 19th wedding anniversary....but because we were going to eat out. We never eat out. We generally don't like to eat out.

Because.....and I'm sincerely not trying to brag....but when you can cook well, it is hard to be impressed by restaurant food.

So I was excited about going out with my hubby, but nervous about the food. Even going to restaurants that people rave about, we usually find ourselves disappointed. When we take the rare opportunity to go out on "date night" we are usually left with "well that was a waste of money." We will enjoy the time we spend together, but not be impressed with what we spent the money on.

So Friday night, we went to Lavelle's Bistro, in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Another Successful Hunt!

Two weeks ago, my husband went on a successful caribou hunt. Meat for the freezer!! Well, today he went out again. This was the phone picture he sent me before he even got home.

Before & After

Yesterday I had to make a quick stop in the store, and as usual, the Alaskan sky was gorgeous.

A Zesty Tale - and Give-Away

For a long time, whenever I needed to zest citris, I used my grandmother's grater. I knew there were better ways of doing it, but I just never got around to looking for a zester. The problem with this, was that it zested the citris much too deeply and not very well.

Winter Fun - Tubing

Yesterday, our family went tubing at the recreational area on Fort Wainwright. This was the first chance we had had to go this winter, and so glad we did!

Last year when we went, it was just me and the boys. This time, Dad was home from Iraq, and Jen was along too.

Before I let you look at this post, I must give you a warning.

If you fall under any of the following categories, DO NOT READ THIS POST.

Afraid of the sight of blood
Afraid of the sight of "dead animals"
Have a phobia of butcher shops
Don't know where meat comes from
Think meat comes from a grocery store....

Then don't look at the post.

But if you understand hunting and the process that goes with it, go right ahead and read the post.

You have been warned.

Aurora Borealis

This is the first time this year that I have ventured out to see "The Lights." Because quite frankly I am not hard core enough to do it at Negative 40.... but 18 degrees is acceptable!
