Hungarian Goulash

Recipe: "Hungarian Goulash"

This is a very simple recipe that I grew up eating.  My mom found this recipe somewhere, and it was one of my favorites.  It is a very simple meat sauce, that is eaten on egg noodles.  I don't know where the name really comes from, but it was labeled "Hungarian Goulash."

Hungarian Goulash

1 lb stew meat or round steak cut up
1 onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1/8 c (2 Tb) shortening
1 1/2 c water
1/2 c ketchup
1 Tb brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp dry mustard
3-4 dashes tobasco sauce

Egg Noodles

In a large saucepan, melt shortening.  Add onion, garlic and meat.  Cook until meat is browned. Add remaining ingredients, except noodles.  Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat.  Simmer on low for 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours.  The longer you simmer it, the more tender the meat will be.  When it is done, thicken the sauce with some cornstarch & water.  Serve on noodles.

This is very inexpensive to make, and goes great with a salad and bread.
